Port Angeles Track & Field Program

Rules for Use and Handling of the Throwing Events

1. No one will be allowed to throw any implement until they have received instruction from a

    coach.

2. You are not allowed to throw the javelin or hammer unless there is a coach present to

supervise (two for the hammer).  You may throw the shot put and discus as long as there is

a coach on the upper field.  All athletes will stand behind the nets while the hammer or

discus is being thrown.  When throwing the javelin, all athletes will throw in the same

    direction.

3. The shot put, discus and hammer will be stored in the sheds on the track.  The javelins will

be stored in the track & field cage in the weight room.

4. Anyone not demonstrating the proper use and technique of the throwing implements will

not be allowed to participate as a thrower in a meet.  An athlete must have at least two

practices in a particular throw before competing in that throw.

5. The javelin will be thrown on the lower field during practice.  It is only thrown on the upper

field if the coach deems it safe.  During competition, the men throw the javelin on the lower

field and the women on either the lower field or the upper field.

6. During practice, all implements will be thrown prior to retrieval.

7. Before you throw, look to make sure no one (except a coach) is standing in the throwing

area.  If a coach is observing you from the front, make sure he/she is paying attention

    before you throw.

8. All throwing events are dangerous and can result in DEATH.  Horseplay and/or unauthorized

use of equipment and facilities is prohibited.  Breaking any of these rules may eliminate you

from participating in the event and could result in dismissal from the team dependent upon

    the severity of the infraction.

9. I have communicated with my parents about the discipline required in throwing the javelin.

I have read and been explained the above rules and realize that I have responsibly duty in carrying out instructions.
