Extra-curricular/Co-curricular
POLICY STATEMENT
To participate in a co-curricular activity, Port Angeles students must: 1) be passing all their classes, and 2) not miss any class to participate in a co-curricular activity.
Co-curricular refers to those activities which are an extension of a specific class. Student council is a co-curricular activity. Traditional field trips are exempt from this policy.
Extra-curricular refers to those activities which traditionally are not an extension of any specific class. All levels of sports are considered extra-curricular.
PROCEDURES FOR IMPLEMENTING THIS POLICY
1. The most recent triad or semester grade report will determine a student’s eligibility to participate in extra-curricular and co-curricular activities:
Note 1: The first grade report to count for this policy will be the grade report for the first triad in the fall semester of 1997-98 school year. Starting with the 1997-98 school year, the semester grade report from the previous spring will count.
Note 2: Middle
school grades will count in determining eligibility for ninth grade students.
2. A grade of “NC” will count as a passing grade for the purpose of this policy.
3. Students who are ineligible because of a 1st or 2nd triad grade can become eligible as soon as they document that they are passing all of their classes.
4. Students who are ineligible because of a semester grade can become eligible by passing all of their classes after three weeks of the next semester. EXCEPTION: Those students who failed only one class will not become ineligible until the second Monday of the semester for the second semester. They also can become eligible before the three week ends as soon as they document that they have raised the one failing grade to a passing grade.
Note: WIAA has stricter requirements for students who failed more than two classes.
5. Students are responsible for documenting their grades in restoring their eligibility (‘#’s 3 and 4 above). Students are to use the form on the other side. Students who falsify this documentation lose their eligibility for the remainder of the semester.
6. The athletic director is responsible for administering this policy.
