The Peninsula Junior Rifle Team Inc. was founded in July of 2004. We are a
non-profit corporation with a 501c3 filing status, which means that any donation
to our organization is tax deductible. Our corporation has a very active Board
of Directors who are involved with the coaching of our Juniors and most are
active in competitive shooting themselves. We also encourage parents to get
involved.
Our activities include a variety of shooting disciplines. We start
all new shooters with a safety course before they are allowed to use any
equipment. This course involves watching training videos and reading several
pieces of literature. After completing this course the new shooter signs an
agreement stating that he or she understands the rules of conduct expected on
the range and agrees to the consequences of failing to adhere to those rules.
Once the agreement has been signed, the new shooter is ready to be introduced to
the equipment with one-on-one instruction and safe weapon handling instructions.
A new shooter uses the Daisy Air rifle. There are several classifications of
shooters starting with Marksman. When their sores are consistently above 73%,
they graduate to the Sharpshooter level. The next level with scores above 83% is
Expert. At this level they have mastered the positions, showing adequate skill
level and are introduced to the Avanti Compressed Air rifle. This is the rifle
the team member uses in competitions and will take to Nationals. At this point
the shooter is also invited to learn High-Power competition which is coached at
outdoor ranges using the Arma-Lite AR-15.
We encourage the juniors that exhibit leadership qualities to participate in
coaching and fund-raising. We collect no dues or fees but rely primarily on
volunteers and donations.
Our shooters come from Port Angeles and Sequim. Ages range from 10 to 20.
Juniors cannot compete until age 12 years of age mainly because they are not
strong enough to handle the equipment. We work with younger shooters so they are
ready to compete by their 12th birthday.
Practices are held Thursdays 4:00 to 6:00 PM at the Moose Lodge, 809 South
Pine St., Port Angeles, WA. There are no scheduled practices on holidays or
weekends.
