Youth Clinic Outline 8 - 10 Year Olds

Use a variety of fast moving drills and a variety of equipment to keep the teaching and learning aspects of the practice at a relaxed, fluid, and fun level. Players need to value the experience as much as the skills.


0:00 - 0:10 Introductions and review outline. THE KIDS WANT TO KNOW YOU BY NAME.

0:10 - 0:15 Partner fun run along outfield fence to warm up muscles. THIS IS NOT ENDURANCE TRAINING.

0:15 - 0:30 Form Run. Dynamic stretching and strengthening helps you become a faster base runner.

• Stride and Glide, High Knees, Butt Kickers, Deer Bounds

0:30 - 0:40 Stretch for flexibility.

• Hang down and cross each leg, Quads, Arm Rolls, Arms Front,  Arms Behind Head, Groin
• Right and Left Tuck, Beauty Queens
• Partner Arms Up and Down, Throwing Stretch Forearm Up and Forearm down

0:40 - 1:00 Base Running

• Run through first
• Round first, break down, and gather
• Double
• Second base situations using infielders
• Third base situations using infielders
• Tag on fly balls
• Freeze on line drives

1:00 - 1:15 Arm stretches and throwing progression. This is a time to practice and strengthen the arm. Play catch together to insure warm up is being done correctly. This allows the coach to manage the pace and teach proper procedures.

• Throwing Progression, Rock, Reach Throw, / Reach, Throw, / Step, Reach, Throw

1:15 - 1:45 EDD's (Every Day Drills), Groundballs, and Fly Balls

• Infielders practice fielding ground balls right, left, center, forward, and back.
• 1st Base: Playing the short hop, Pivots to second base.
• 2nd Base: Double play pivots and foot work
• SS: Double play pivots and footwork
• 3rd Base: Double play pivots

• Pitcher and catcher communicating on past balls
• Pitchers backing up
• Pitchers covering first
• Towel drills

• Catchers Framing
• Steals
• Blocking
• Passed Balls

• The primary focus of the outfielder is to position the body to attack through the ball towards the infield.

1:45 - 2:00 Defensive situations

2:00 - 2:10 Bathroom, water, and snack break.

2:10 - 3:00 Hitting mechanics and practice.

1. Bunt station - Teach younger kids to square around, bat flat, and bend knees.
2. Wiffle lob station
3. Wiffle off tee
4. Wiffle ball pitch
5. Live hitting with hard ball lobs

3:00 - 3:55 Wiffle ball scrimmage game.

3:55 - 4:00 Pick Up and Wrap Up. Hand out signed certificates of participation.
