Base Running Progression

Always Explain Why
Make the opponent fear seeing base runners on the base path. Pitchers should be distracted and taken out of their rhythm because of aggressive running. Make base running a priority and spend at least 20 minutes a day working up to all components of the progression.

01. Home to First
• Simulates a ground ball or bunt
• Back foot drives out of the box
• Run in a straight line and stay in the runners box
• Watch your foot hit the front of the bag and do not lunge
• Look away for an overthrown ball
• Break down just past the bag
• Turn inside and find the ball

Enhance the drill by holding or dropping a ball behind first base for the running to read. A dropped ball will send the runner to second.

02. Home to First Aggressive Turn
• Simulates a ball through the infield
• Same as before out of the box
• Start turn at 1/3 point
• Turn in straight line to 2nd
• Watch either foot touch inside corner of the bag
• Break down and gather with weight on front foot
• Retreat looking over shoulder at ball

Enhance the drill by standing in shallow right field holding or dropping a ball for the runner to read. A dropped ball will send the runner to second. You could also utilize a throwing error.

03. Home to Second
• Same as before out of box and to the bag
• Sprint to the inside corner of the bag

04. Leads and Backs
• Utilize a coach or pitcher on the mound
• Right, left cross, right, and up to three shuffles
• Weight off heels
• Read pitchers back heel
• Come back standing
• Look for overthrow

05. Reading the Open Shoulder (RH)
• Utilize a coach or pitcher on the mound

• Running on a pitcher who comes set and who never throws over

• Leaner

• Everything right

• Left hander

• Running on a pitcher who only throws over once. Go on first movement.

• Delay steel

• Hit and run
